I've been taking a lot of holiday pictures for friends lately and trying to get little kids to sit still long enough to take them is quite a challenge. I've found that bribery works well, quickly followed by a stern tone should the promise of a trip to the toy aisle at Target not do the trick. When all else fails I scream CHEESE! Works every time.
Something happens at a certain age and kids begin to have a Pavlovian response to the word. They sit up straight, puff out their chest and smile big for the camera. We get the shot and everybody goes home happy. I love those shots. But I also love the unrehearsed ones. The imperfect ones, where everyone is laughing and smiling so genuinely you wish you were in the photo with them.
Food, by contrast, is much easier to photograph. It rarely moves and doesn't get mad when it thinks it looks fat in a shot. I love photographing both, none the less, because it gives me the freedom to capture different types of moments, have more control and less. Be creative and be observant. Sometimes I create the shot and sometimes I capture the shot life has created.
Today we're staying solidly in the food realm. For Thanksgiving I wanted to make something fun for an appetizer since my hosts were generously making most of the meal. I settled on baked brie because it's easy and frankly cheese makes me happy. I found a great recipe that incorporated dried cranberries, pecans and maple syrup which made it feel even more special for the holiday. The brie was in a good mood too so it only asked me to redo one shot......models!!!:)
