Ice cream is one of those things that makes life great. It's creamy and rich and delectable and amazing. Can you tell I have a bit of a love affair with it? I also get very nostalgic about certain flavors. I know, I know.....who knew I could be nostalgic? Pumpkin from Gelati Celesti here in Richmond makes me think of fall, football games and high school. The Mint Chocolate Chip from Baskin Robbins, in my humble opinion, has the best chocolate/mint ratio I've ever had which makes each bite perfect. Superman, which is just vanilla ice cream with different colors, makes me think of summers at the pool when I was a kid. A particular Lemon Basil that I had at a restaurant in New York is still the best I've ever had, but Chocolate Haagen Dazs will always make my toes curl.
The past few years ice cream has made a bit of a culinary come back and now I even see savory flavors like white pepper on menus in DC and around the country on my travels. I wanted to try my hand at making my own a few months ago and it actually turned out great. The lavender honey ice cream I made for book club couldn't have been easier. This past week on staycation I felt like nesting so homemade ice cream was definitely on the agenda. I settled on a recipe from Bon Appetit magazine which you can find here. It's essentially vanilla ice cream with a cherry bourbon syrup that tasted absolutely incredible. I'd offer you some but I ate it all:).
