{ Miss Austen loves to ride in the car }

I am driving up 85 in the
Kind of morning that lasts all afternoon
Just stuck inside the gloom
4 more exits to my apartment but
I am tempted to keep the car in drive
And leave it all behind

Why Georgia, John Mayer

The drive from Richmond to Atlanta on 85 will always hold a special place in my heart. Oddly enough, one by one, most of my family have transplanted down there so I've probably made the drive over 30 times since High School. It's long don't get me wrong. Door-to-door it takes me about 9 hours with stops. Well....8 if I'm on my own or my mom at least isn't with me to keep reminding me how fast I'm driving. But despite the length, and the less than glamorous scenery, I've come to love it. Probably because more than anything it's been a happy drive. My sister Genie calling to say she was in labor with Jack....hopped in the car. My little brother and sister's graduations....hopped in the car. I gotta get out of Richmond...hopped in the car. There have been a few bad drives though. The day after my father died.....hopped in the car. That wasn't fun.

I've had great companions over the years too. My best friend Miranda and I have driven it numerous times, equipped with spray cheddar cheese and Triscuits because that's our favorite travel snack:). Miss Austen accompanies me on a regular basis as well. She loves traveling and all of the fun places we stop so she can walk around. These include McDonald's parking lots, Starbuck's parking lots and many other glamorous locales. Cuisine along the way is also something not to be missed. At Waffle House I get my hash browns scattered, covered and topped with a cherry coke. At the Fastmart Truck Stop in Greenville, South Carolina the horrifyingly bad coffee will get you through any tired spell. Beef jerky and corn nuts are also a favorite and can be found at pretty much any gas station along the way.

This time I headed South for the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) bookended by some family time. A happy and fun trip to be sure. On the way back though you can usually, and I'm sure this time:), hear me say at least once I am never doing this again we are flying!!!! And yet, I always find myself in Petersburg taking the 85 Atlanta exit on the right. It's time to think...time to reflect..time to listen to Broadway by Allison Krause just one more time. It's 85. And I look forward to the drives ahead........

{ A nifty map at a McDonald's in South Hill, VA }

{ We don't have them in Richmond so I try and stop when I'm on the way down }

{ Gas gets cheaper the further South you drive it's like Christmas }

{ I've heard you should be healthy when you travel but I think that's crap }
